Memorial Day at Grand View

World War II veteran Bill Taylor assumed responsibility Monday morning for laying flowers at the base of a flagpole in memory of U.S. military personnel who were killed in action or have since passed away. About 50 people including a dozen or so veterans gathered at Grand View Cemetery in Anacortes for a brief 11 a.m. service conducted by members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Services were also held on the Guemes Ferry and at Fern Hill Cemetery on Highway 20. More photos and details regarding the Grand View ceremony are posted under “Lest We Forget” in the Activities section. Also posted in recognition of Memorial Day are photos and text under “In honored memory.” For photos of the new National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., see www.msnbc.msn.com. Among photos is one of a field of 40,000 gold stars on “Freedom Wall” – representing American lives lost in the war.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
