Tribute to a great President

Ronald W. Reagan, 40th President of the United States, died at his home in California on the afternoon of Saturday, June 5. I am proud of this photograph of President Reagan from my dad’s personal collection. My father, Buehl Berentson (left) and his friend Ed Terrill (right) posed with then California Governor Reagan at a national. Reagan hired Dad to serve as Executive Director of the Republican Governors Association. Dad, who was born in Anacortes and lives here today, spent many years in Washington, D.C. after an initial move to serve as Administrative Assistant to 2nd District Congressman Jack Westland. Ronald Reagan, 93, lived longer than any U.S. president, spending the last 10 years in seclusion as a result of Alzheimer’s disease.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
