Noon Kiwanis scholarships

Members of the Noon Kiwanis Club “invested in the future” on Thursday, June 10, distributing scholarships to 22 individuals, primarily high school students. In addition to a group of impressive 2004 Anacortes High School graduates were several college and vocational technical school students. Scholarship recipients and their guests were the focus of the Noon Kiwanis Club’s regular membership meeting. Club member Jeanne Robinette, who served on the organization’s Scholarship Committee, described as “heartwarming and encouraging” the accomplishments and aspirations of those who applied for the scholarships. Much of the funding for the Kiwanis scholarships comes from proceeds at the downtown Thrift Shop. Scholarship recipients included: Sarah Kenote, Jenny Thompson, Connie Barnes, Mark Berentson, Dustin Stevens, Cedar Petrick, Victoria Wyllie-Echeverria, Ashley Portis, Ice Beirnes, Erik Sexton, Ashley Thompson, Kyle Pyke, Jaime Bingham, Emma Moore, Heather Thompson, Sarah Brown, Richard Reeves, Mary Hanson, Amanda Villiott, Evan Pyke, Robin Weinberg and Kari Sherman.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
