Dining at Captain’s Place

It’s peak season for Darwin and Patti Anderson, owners of the Captain’s Place Restaurant at Cap Sante Boat Haven. Pictured here are employees Katy Grossman (left) and Emily Erholm, both Anacortes High School graduates. Darwin has cooking in his blood, as his father was named to the Chef’s Hall of Fame. Ownership of the restaurant is a lifetime dream he realized in 1987. If it’s maritime atmosphere you’re seeking, this is the place to be. Darwin, who is diabetic, features traditional seafood and low-carb, low sugar menu items. “The restaurant business is great,” he says. “I see it as inviting people into my home, my beachfront cabin. There are a lot of good restaurants in Anacortes. I look at all of us as pieces of a puzzle. We’ve been here a long time, and had a lot of fun getting to where we’re at.”

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
