African children in spotlight
It was my privilege Friday night to experience the African Children’s Choir, a Christian group made up of orphans from numerous African countries. The choir, with U.S. headquarters in Arlington, Washington, marks its 20th anniversary this year. I took this photograph while three of the children waited in the wings at Brodniak Auditorium before running onstage for a marvelous dance routine. The children’s music director is herself an “alum” of the children’s choir. Among the highlights of the evening was a quiet time when individual children stepped to the microphone to recite their favorite Bible verse and to tell the audience of their career dreams: nurse, artist … and even president. They closed the program with two renditions of “God Bless America,” the first in a native tongue and the second in English. For more information on this wonderful program, see www.africanchildrens choir.com. To see more photos from their Anacortes performance, see the Activities section under “Sweet music from Africa.”
