Would-be senator visits

U.S. Rep. George Nethercutt wants to be kicked upstairs to the U.S. Senate, so he’s investing a lot of shoe leather in the 2004 campaign. Nethercutt, who is from Spokane, seeks to unseat Patty Murray. He visited Anacortes Monday, with stops including Select Styling and AM 1340 KLKI. This photo was taken in Mount Vernon last Friday night as Nethercutt made another Skagit stop to raise money and to see old friends including Mount Vernon Mayor Bud Norris. The two trace their friendship back to college days at Washington State University. Also on hand that night were County Commissioner Don Munks and Anacortes City Councilman Ray Sizemore. About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
