Block improvements

Improvements to the west side Commercial block between 4th and 5th streets began Monday. It is strange to hear chainsaws and jackhammers in the downtown area, and to see stumps where beautiful trees once stood, but improvements scheduled by City Hall call for replacement of trees and sidewalks. Those who are curious about what the changes will look like need only walk to the next block in front of Gere-a-Deli and its neighbors to the south. Trees will be replaced with a species featuring a root system that won’t heave the sidewalk or cause other problems underground. New sidewalks will be complemented by a strip of concrete patterned to look like old brick. Businesses remain open during the project … pay a visit and help them out.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
