Bush wins re-election

When I ran into Andy Stevens (far right) in the grocery store Tuesday afternoon, he was anxious about Election Day and exit poll reports. He left the store to return to his post with other dedicated Bush volunteers at the busy intersection of 12th and Commercial Avenue. As was the case on many weekends during the presidential campaign, there were Kerry supporters on the other side of the street. Today, as always after Election Day, some folks are ecstatic and others dejected. Stevens, who with a dedicated team of others spent many long hours waving placards over the past few months, saw his candidate acknowledge his Election 2004 win in a brief speech this morning on TV. Democrat opponent John Kerry conceded this morning after concluding Ohio’s electoral votes would indeed go to Bush with approximately 51 percent of the total. This photograph, taken months ago at the corner of 9th and Q Avenue, includes Stevens and fellow Bush supporters (l. to r.) Jim Baker, Paul Tankersley and Doug Thurber.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
