On a day that began with the traditional Northwest winter scraping of the windshield, Gloria Napualani Fujii and two of her friends transported me and a few hundred elementary school students on a delightful “Polynesian adventure” featuring music and dance. Fujii, a Seattle resident, is originally from Hawaii. She came to Washington in 1970 to attend the University of Washington and has been here since. Today she and others, including dancer Michelle Peterson and musician Bill Nahalea, travel to schools and other venues to share music, dance and culture with their audiences. Fujii, a 1999 recipient of the Washington State Governor’s Heritage Award, delighted students at Mt. Erie and Fidalgo elementary schools.
