Dad’s birthday

What a great day! I took a coffee break this morning at Stork’s Restaurant and had the opportunity to spend some quality time with two of the most important role models in my life: my father, Buehl Berentson (right), and my friend and former boss, Wallie Funk. Dad, who was born here in 1925, celebrates his 80th birthday today. Wallie’s also a native Anacortesan, born a couple of years earlier. Dad and wallie knew each other from grade school, and in their young adult lives both were active in community improvement efforts including controversial LID (local improvement district) campaigns that led to modernizing city streets and infrastructure. Wallie spent a career in the newspaper business and Dad split his career between politics and real estate. Both are retired now, and I am blessed to see them on a regular basis, because all three of us are smart enough to know that Anacortes is one of the most beautiful little corners in God’s creation. Happy birthday, Dad!

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
