Arch framework

Visitors to the 2005 Anacortes Waterfront Festival will get a glimpse of things to come if they pass under the new arch framework at 10th and Commercial Avenue. The City of Anacortes took care of sidewalk, gutter, and street related improvements. The Destination Downtown Anacortes (DDA) Arch Committee will handle construction of the arch. All funds for the arch and its sign are being raised by the Arch Committee, with support from the DDA (a subsidiary of the Chamber of Commerce).
An industrious contractor crew, with the encouragement of City Hall’s Steve Lange, wrapped up this part of a block renovation project in time to open both lanes to traffic once again. Meanwhile, Jonn Lunsford and a dedicated Parks Crew did an awesome job of weeding along “R” Avenue, beautifying the entrance to the waterfront area for the busy weekend. More work lies ahead for the arch, inspired to welcome visitors to our seaside community.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
