Awakening festival

Anacortes opens its arms today to countless thousands who will pour into the island community for the renowned Arts Festival. Among those already on Commercial Avenue at 7:15 this morning was Jodie Snow of Calico Cupboard Restaurant and Bakery. With baked goods mounded in front of her, Jodie prepared for the flood of hungry festival goers. I saw Festival Director Joan Tezak with clipboard in hand, along with Richard Mitlyng, a long-time festival principal. I also noticed that the Lady Washington slipped back into town, offering yet another choice on a weekend “menu” that offers something for every taste. The festival opens today and runs through Saturday and Sunday, complete with arts, crafts and entertainment. Don’t miss it.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
