Oyster Run Sunday

Sunday was the day for a seemingly endless chorus of muffler noise. I didn’t get downtown until late in the day, but there were still hundreds of bikes moving up and down Commercial Avenue. According to the Skagit Valley Herald, seven crashes involved motorcycles Sunday in the area of Anacortes. Police estimated between 10,000 to 13,000 motorcycles were present at the event. Five people were reportedly flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious injuries and at least four people remained in the hospital’s intensive care unit as of Monday morning. At least six collisions involving motorcycles were reported to Anacortes police or the State Patrol. Three of the crashes occurred on Highway 20 near March Point Road within the same two miles. Seven people were taken to either Island Hospital in Anacortes or Harborview. The other three crashes occurred in downtown Anacortes. Three of the motorcyclists, who were wearing helmets, suffered head injuries. Another was unharmed.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
