Holiday food drive

It’s a dual purpose day for the Salvation Army in Skagit County. Saturday serves as kickoff day for the 2005 Red Kettle drive, and also as a community-wide food drive conducted by student athletes. The event, hosted by KLKI Radio on Commercial Avenue, features live music and refreshments for volunteers. Pictured here is Anacortes Corps Captain Mike Paugh beside a VW “Bug” decorated in Salvation Army graphics. Mayor Dean Maxwell will officially kick off the holiday Red Kettle campaign at 1 p.m. The kettle campaign runs between now and Christmas. It is the Army’s major fund-raiser for the year. Call 293-6682 for details about the Army in Skagit County.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
