Community responds

Anacortes residents responded in a big way last Saturday to a community-wide food drive held on behalf of the Salvation Army Food Bank. KLKI radio station served as “base” for the food drive, conducted by student athletes from Anacortes High School. Also featured during the day was the kickoff of the Christmas Kettle campaign, the Salvation Army’s major annual fund-raiser. Before day’s end, students delivered about 8,000 pounds of food. The kettle drew about $2,500 in donations after being “primed” by Mayor Dean Maxwell. Local business people Nels Strandberg, Bill Wooding and Ray Sizemore donated a total of 1,333 pounds of holiday turkeys, following in the wake of a $1,000 donation for Thanksgiving turkeys given by Allan Schroeder of Portalis Homes. Recent donations also included about 600 pounds of food collected by students and staff from Secret Harbor School. If you’d like to help, call the Salvation Army Anacortes Corps at 293-6682 or mail to PO Box 303, Anacortes 98221.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
