Cougs ranked

Take one photo, add a bunch of cyan, and you’ve got a tribute to “the eastside W” — Washington State University. Fresh from upsetting Arizona, Washington State appeared on The Associated Press Top 25 men’s basketball poll for the first time in a generation on Monday, debuting at No. 22 in a tie with Notre Dame. It was the first time since a one-week appearance in 1983 that the Cougars have been ranked in the Top 25. They are No. 23 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll. Picked last in the Pac-10’s preseason media poll, the Cougars are off to their best start in more than a decade under first-year coach Tony Bennett. This photograph was taken at the new entry to Cap Sante Boat Haven. The “W” is actually gold (hmmm, sounds vaguely familiar) and appears on a compass inlaid in tile and stone.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
