Hawks prevail

Josh Freeman stands at the line prepared to drop in one of his 11 fourth quarter points in a gritty 57-46 win over Ferndale. The Anacortes High School Seahawks varsity team, coached by Rick Mergenthaler, continues to show the kind of strength and team play that could lead to the state playoffs. This game was closer than the score would indicate, but the Seahawks had essentially wrapped up the win with two minutes remaining. KLKI broacaster Eric Tietjen said this was the first high school game he recalls where one of the teams (Ferndale) failed to score even one point from the free throw line. They were 0-2, more evidence of Anacortes’ defensive strength. I had the pleasure of watching the game with Gene Ferrario, childhood running buddy and AHS basketball player in the late Sixties. Gene’s nephew, Mike, had a great game.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
