BJ & friends

Friends and family gathered Saturday night at Anacortes Christian Church for a benefit concert on behalf of BJ Daniells (right), a Guemes Island resident who learned recently he has a brain tumor. Among a large group of entertainer friends was Bill Hicks (pictured here), who attends the Bridge Christian Fellowship with BJ and his wife, Darcy. Bill accompanied BJ on a mission trip to Mexico recently. BJ’s Mexico ministry dates back more than a decade, and those among the audience Saturday were two friends who traveled from Mexico. Other benefit events to help with costs including medical expenses will be held in the community. Donations can be made to the BJ Daniells Fund at Washington Federal Savings Bank in Anacortes. See more photos in Activities section under “BJ benefit event.”

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
