Italian dining

Tuesday evening marked the opening of a new downtown restaurant – Bellissima Trattoria at 904 Commercial Avenue. This dining room will likely become a bustling community of diners as Head Chef Andy Ferguson presides over a kitchen producing many of the favorites from the former Bella Isola, which he and Julianne operated for almost 10 years. In addition to the Fergusons, partners include Marianne Mach and Tyler Mach, also familiar faces in the downtown business district. The restaurant opened Tuesday with menu items ranging from hand-made pastas to steak, chops and pizza. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
