Mountain man

Special guest at Tesoro Refinery Thursday was Ed Viesturs, the first American to climb the highest 14 mountains in the world. Viesturs, a Bainbridge Island resident, spoke on the subject of safety, noting that he and climbing partners turned back from the summit on several occasions because they were concerned for their safety. Viesturs climbed Mt. Everest six times, the last time as co-expedition leader with David Breashears on a climb that was filmed for Working Title Films and Universal Pictures. Viesturs climbed all 14 of the world’s highest mountains without bottled oxygen. Oh, and he’s familiar with Northwest peaks, too. He’s climbed Mt. Rainier 196 times! Viesturs should get into politics now that he’s done conquering the world’s highest peaks. He attended the UW for undergraduate studies AND has a degree in veterinary science from Washington State University.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
