Theater homecoming

It was a homecoming of sorts last week when Marie Jacobsen and Karen Williams (center) attended the grand opening of The Bank of the Pacific at 801 Commercial Avenue. The bank is located in a building originally built as a movie theater, and these women worked as ushers when they were young. As evidence by the Marilyn Monroe cutout to the right, the bank opening followed the theme of a movie premiere, complete with red carpet, popcorn, candy and “stars.” Among dignitaries were bank CEO Dennis Long and his wife, pictured here. The theater was called the Paramont, and featured a vertical sign out front. Branch Manager Mike Trafton elected to go with a vertical neon sign out front, too. Interior design follows the period theme with amazing woodwork, and a wall of photographs from the Anacortes Museum Wallie Funk Collection tells the story of the theater and the community it served.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
