Fond farewells

The close of the school year marks the close of careers for several Anacortes School District teachers and district nurse Margaret Cook (second from left). Among eight educators honored Thursday at an afternoon reception were (l. to r.) Richard Mitlyng, Margaret Cook, Terry Buchanan and Kathy Buchanan. The event, co-sponsored by the school district and the Anacortes Education Association, presented the opportunity for teachers and their peers to reflect on a combined total of 300 years of experience. Superintendent Chris Borgen, a former teacher, coach and principal in Anacortes, said his new job has yielded the privilege of seeing many letters, notes and emails “citing the incredible impacts teachers and staff have made in the lives of our students.” Among those in the audience were school board members, family and friends of retirees. Also honored for their years of service were Pat Burleson, Roger Boardman, Kevin Miller, Leslie Madrona and Sue Hanson.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
