Mrs. McCrea

Inspired by the recent Anacortes High School Centennial, I post this photograph from 1960: Mrs. Thelma McCrea’s third grade class at Mt. Erie Elementary School. Here you will find Joyce Stewart, Michael Culbertson, Carol Hjort, Judy Lesage, James Driftmeir; Cathleen Swapp, Jack Fader, Carol Dittes, Timmy Hinds, Delbert Freelund, Robert Titterness, Rosemary Harness. Also pictured are Susan Frank, Tommy Spencer, Carol Bruns, Mark Flickinger, Christa Knapp, Loren Troutman, Stephen Berentson; Paul Mahoney, Dirk Lunsford, Cheryl Gillespie, Vernette Thompson, Linda Larsen, Shelley Stratton, David Hammond. Mt. Erie was a new school then, and boy did we know how to have fun on that playground! Within a few months after this photo was taken, by dad took a job as administrative assistant to Congressman Jack Westland, and we were off to Springfield, Virginia. I didn’t call Anacortes home again until 1980.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
