Salmon label

Many years I ago I invested in a collection of salmon can labels. Anacortes was once the salmon canning capital of the world, so it seemed appropriate to acknowledge that distinction with the purchase of a set of labels, many quite beautiful. Among the labels is this one from the Fidalgo Island Packing Company. Next year will be “the year of the salmon” in Anacortes, with several nostalgic projects including downtown sidewalk waste containers painted like can labels. There will also be an Anacortes Scholarship Salmon Derby March 10 and 11, with promotional materials created by local artist Bill Mitchell, a huge salmon label buff.

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
