On top of Mt. Erie

This is a great week to visit the summit of Mt. Erie, sun shining and air crisp and clear. An old Chamber of Commerce brochure I’ve got in my collection reads: “Highest point on Fidalgo Island. From Heart Lake Road the Mount Erie Road ascends to a panoramic view without equal on the Pacific Coast (wow!). snowclad Mt. Baker dominates the Cascade Range to the east; Mt. Rainier appears in the south. To the southwest is the Olympic Peninsula and the majestic Olympic Mountains and to the north, the rugged Selkirk Range. Grouped about the base of the breathtaking vista are six fresh water lakes, the most dominant of which is Lake Campbell, widely known (wow!) for its ‘Island on an Island’ status with Ripley’s Believe it or Not.”

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
