Coastal Messenger

Anacortes resident Eric Moe (left) was reunited with old friend Roy Getman (right) when the mission vessel “Coastal Messenger” of Canada made a stop Friday in LaConner. A tour of the boat included this visit to the engine room, which features a John Deere diesel engine. The Coastal Missions outreach ministry team visits up and down the West Coast, primarily from British Columbia to Alaska. The Christian ministry is described in part as “a reinforcement to existing church and missionary endeavors.” Eric first met Roy through his in-laws, Al and Mae Carpenter. The ministry’s original wooden boat was replaced by the current steel vessel in 1999. The 52-ft. boat was designed by Getman and built in Victoria, B.C. About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
