Hawks 7th in state

Anacortes Seahawks had plenty to cheer about Friday afternoon after a tough two-point win that sent the boys team into a 1:30 p.m. Saturday game with Mt. Baker at the State 2A Basketball Tournament in Tacoma. Anacortes Seahawk boys lost 42-40 in overtime Saturday to close their season, 7th in state. They had lost a heartbreaker Thursday to Mark Morris, losing by a bucket dropped in the closing seconds. Friday they came out on top in a similar last-second situation, defeating cross-county rival Burlington-Edison 47-45 to advance with a shot at fourth place. A previously unbeaten Mark Morris lost the state title game to Lynden Saturday. This photo of the Seahawks bench was taken at the last home game. The AHS girls also dropped a tough game Thursday, and were eliminated Friday in a loser-out game against Sehome, 57-52. Congratulations, girls, and Coach Ken Welk, on an incredible 25-3 season with 22 wins in a row before district and state tournament losses. Congratulations boys, and Coach Mergenthaler, on a tremendous season.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
