Winner to state

Players on the AHS varsity baseball team celebrate victory over Archbishop Murphy High School in the bottom of the 7th inning Tuesday at Daniels Field. Kyle Knudsen (8) scored the winning run on a hit by AJ Miles (far right), assuring the Seahawks a berth at the state tournament. Congratulating Knudsen is teammate Kyle LaRue, who pitched the entire game, getting the Hawks out of a couple of tough jams along the way. Included in the afternoon action was a controversial interference call that closed an exciting Anacortes inning that would have yielded at least one run. More action continues at Daniels Field Saturday, May 12.

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
