State of Station

U.S. Navy Cmdr. Matt Miller celebrated Valentine’s Day with his wife Heather … sort of … delivering a “State of the Station” message to a morning audience of Chamber of Commerce members in Anacortes. Miller, who becomes Executive Officer of NAS Whidbey next week, is an Anacortes resident and self-described “silent partner” of children’s shop Read Me A Story in downtown Anacortes. The 26-year Navy veteran delivered a fascinating report on the neighboring Navy air base, including news that a new aircraft nicknamed the “Growler” will begin to replace the familiar old EA6B starting this spring. Miller noted that the Northwest boasts the third largest concentration of naval forces in the U.S.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
