Memorial Day 2008

Ceremony two of a three-ceremony Memorial Day on Fidalgo Island took place at Grandview Cemetery. The morning began for members of the local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) on Guemes Island. An 11 a.m. memorial ceremony was held at Fern Hill Cemetery. In addition to veteran volunteers, the Memorial Day contingent included Skagit County Commissioner Don Munks and Anacortes Port Director Pat Mooney. WWII veteran Bud Strom spoke briefly about the writer of the lyrics to “Taps,” which was then sung by Betsy Mosely. Among those pictured here are Bill Taylor (right), Roland Greenfield (center) and Bud Lane.

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
