Hawks reunite

If you loved Anacortes High School boys basketball in the late Sixties and Seventies, you would have loved to have been at Seafarers’ Memorial last weekend. Prompted by an opportunity to honor their coach, Loren Anderson, dozens of players gathered in Anacortes on August 2. Among those who spoke at the event were Al Johnson, Dave Giles, Gary Nelson, Ken Welk, Gary Gaggens, Jim Harker, Larry Crowell, Monte Birkle, John Kingma and Mike Trafton. Non-players who spoke included Mayor Dean Maxwell, School Superintendent Chris Borgen, event organizer Don Coughlin and father/fan Stan Nelson. Also on hand was Anderson’s Anacortes assistant, Ray Freier. Following his remarks, Anderson honored Freier by giving him the ring he wore as a high school coach. About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
