Museum celebrates

Anacortes history buffs including Betty Lowman Carey and Don McKee gathered at the downtown museum Saturday, September 20 for celebration of the museum’s 50th anniversary. Among features of the event was the display of Carey’s dugout canoe, a boat in which she journeyed alone to Alaska in 1937! McKee, an Anacortes native, is an architect and owner of many homes in “old town” Anacortes. Among those also on hand for the event were Mayor Dean Maxwell, museum director Steve Oakley and former director Gary Cline. The event also featured cake, punch and formal dedication of a new lift for those who prefer it to the many stairs. See more photos in Activities section under “Museum event.”

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
