Buy Close By

Saturday is the day to score on “Buy Close By” bargains among local businesses participating in a Chamber-sponsored shop local campaign. Look for red balloons on the storefronts of businesses offering special deals as part of the campaign. According to the Chamber of Commerce, more than 80 businesses are offering events, special deals, discounts, and other incentives to shoppers. “The goal of the program is to highlight local companies, who combine great service with competitive pricing,” notes the Chamber. “Supporting local business is critically important to Anacortes. Locally-based businesses not only create much greater economic impact than non-local businesses (more than 3:1 in some recent studies) but also contribute more per employee to local charitable efforts in both dollars and time commitment.” See www.anacortes.org for details.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
