Quall to retire

State Representative Dave Quall, pictured here at a marine skills center groundbreaking ceremony in Anacortes, announced he will not seek re-election after 18 years in the state Legislature. The Mount Vernon legislator talked about his career briefly in a welcome message on his website: “When I was first elected to the state House of Representatives in 1992, I never dreamed that I’d have something like this as a way to stay in touch with the people of the 40th district. But here we are. For those who are wondering just who I am — the answer is, I’m a retired teacher, counselor and coach who still considers himself an educator. I am chairman of the House Education Committee, and school-related issues occupy much of my time and attention in Olympia. But as the representative of the entire 40th District, I’m also active on many other issues that are vital to the economy, environment and quality of life here in Skagit, Whatcom and Island counties, including: farmland preservation; transportation, especially ferries; clean air and water; and economic development.”

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
