Berentson biography
Now available at the Anacortes High School (AHS) library is a book about Duane Berentson, Class of 1947. Uncle Duane, of Swinomish Channel Bridge fame, was interviewed by long-time friend Nancy Talbot Doty, who then wrote a biography titled “Duane Berentson: Life as a Team Player.” Duane said of his childhood in Anacortes: “…as difficult as times were because of the Depression, through the 30s and into the early 40s, Fidalgo Island was a great place to grow up.” Duane played sports at AHS, enjoying greatest success playing basketball under Coach “Boots” Wooten. In his senior year the Seahawks won 29 consecutive games. Duane taught school in Burlington and served 18 years in the state Legislature. He served as Washington State Secretary of Transportation before retiring, now splitting his time with wife Joanne between Burlington and Arizona. The opening page of the oral history reads: “From grade school basketball, through nearly sixty years of marriage, teamwork has been the constant feature of Duane Berentson’s journey through life. A noted shooting guard, successful coach, member of Washington State House of Representatives Republican Caucus, Co-Speaker of the House, Secretary of the Department of Transportation and patriarch of a large family, he has been recognized … for his ability to create harmony out of disagreement and cooperation out of competition.”
