Top derby catch

Anacortes resident Brian Darling’s Saturday catch held on for the win at the 2009 Anacortes Salmon Derby. He came away with the $12,000 first prize with this 18.62 pound beauty. Second place was Jamie Morrow, 17.86; third place Bill Lavalle, 17.70. To honors in the Women’s Division went to Tammy Morris with a 14.62-pound fish. Top fish in the Youth Division was Axel Wilhonen’s 17.18 beauty, also a Saturday fish. There were 114 fish caught during the two-day event. The derby is hosted by the Fidalgo Chapter of the Puget Sound Anglers Association. See anacortessalmonderby.com for details. More photos to come on this site.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
