Tea Party

Joining the national stage as Americans all over the country staged tax protest “tea parties” were about three dozen locals gathered at the intersection of Commercial Avenue and 12th Street at noon Wednesday. The event ran several hours, and those gathered in the opening minutes predicted their ranks would grow as the afternoon wore on. Pictured here is Doug Thurber, standing on a car and waving a flag. An elderly gentleman standing next to me while I shot photos suggested the number of “crazies” at the demonstration was low. He said those gathered “are really just protesting President Obama.” I think members of Congress could also be added to the mix. Don’t forget: your 2008 tax return must be postmarked before midnight tonight.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
