Roundabout woes

Smiling in the face of adversity are Frank and Priscilla Michaud, owners of The Store on the south end of Commercial Avenue. Effective this week, the Anacortes “roundabout” project has blocked traffic typically flowing through the intersection of Commercial and Highway 20. Access to The Store is still an option using a detour route (top of Commercial via Longview Avenue, for example) … but the typical flow of customers to this small business has been reduced to a trickle. So far the Michauds have maintained a bright outlook, based in part on a hope that loyal customers will find their way to the shop for lunch, coffee, fresh-baked pastries and a wide selection of wines. “When life gives you a lemon, drink wine,” quips Priscilla. Please consider going out of your way for the next four or so weeks to help small businesses such as The Store. For details about this business, visit www.thestoreinacortes.com.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
