Recalling 9-11

Flags fly at half mast across the nation today (Friday, September 11) in memory of those who were killed in terrorist attacks in our nation eight years ago. President Barack Obama will visit the Pentagon memorial to those who died there in the 2001 attacks, and meet with loved ones of the dead. He issued a proclamation honoring those who died and urging Americans to mark the anniversary with acts of community service. He also pledged to “apprehend all those who perpetrated these heinous crimes, seek justice for those who were killed, and defend against all threats to our national security.” This flag flew at half staff at the Anacortes Police Department/Municipal Court building on “M” Avenue.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
