POW/MIA Day

Dozens of veterans and active military personnel gathered near the Seaplane Base in Oak Harbor Friday to remember their comrades who were prisoners of war (POW) or missing in action (MIA). National POW/MIA Day is the third Friday of every September and Friday was the 30th anniversary of its commemoration. The third Friday of September was picked because it was unconnected to a specific war or cause. Many of the vets attending the service were Vietnam veterans, but there were others from more recent wars, and even a few from World War II. Speakers and color guard were from NAS Whidbey. Members of the Oak Harbor High School Band played, and there was a flyover by a pair of F18s. See more photos in Activities section.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
