Groundbreaking crew

A groundbreaking ceremony for Anthony’s restaurant drew local politicians by the dozens Friday afternoon. Among them were some honored to be part of the “official” Golden Shovel crew: (r. to l.) Economic Development Association of Skagit County Director Don Wick, State Rep. Dave Quall, Port Executive Bob Hyde, Anacortes City Council member Cynthia Richardson, Port Commissioner Keith Rubin, Anacortes Mayor Dean Maxwell, Anthony’s founder Budd Gould and his son. Following the groundbreaking event, Anthony’s hosted a delicious luncheon at the Port Warehouse. Among other elected officials there were City Council members Nick Petrish, Bill Turner, Erica Pickett, Brian Geer and Brad Adams. Also on hand were Skagit County commissioners Ken Dahlstedt, Ron Wesen and Sharon Dillon, as well as Port of Skagit Commissioner Jerry Kaufman. Anacortes School Board President Kris Lytton was also present, as was Mitch Everton, who wears two hats as Chamber Director and School Board member.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
