Funds for school

Pemco Insurance representative Jim Menzies (left) came to Anacortes bearing gifts Tuesday afternoon. Actually, it was a single gift … a $1,500 check for Island View Elementary School delivered in the wake of Principal Bernard Selting’s selection as a KCTS Channel 9/Pemco “Golden Apple” award winner. Accompanying Menzies was Bruce Engebretsen (center), who serves as area marketing director for the School Employees Credit Union of Washington. Selting credited the school faculty, much of which was present for the noon event, for doing the day-to-day work that drew statewide honors. The school and other “Golden Apple” winners will be featured in a television program in February 2010. The statewide Golden Apple Awards program is sponsored by KCTS 9 and funded by PEMCO Insurance and the School Employees Credit Union of Washington. In April, KCTS 9 invited students, parents, teachers and community members to nominate individuals and programs epitomizing excellence in education in public and private schools across the state. The station received more than 150 nominations for this year

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
