Lew Janz memorial

Hundreds gathered Saturday, April 17 for a service in memory of Anacortes resident Lew Janz, who died April 13 as the result of injuries sustained in an April 2 explosion at Tesoro Refinery. Janz, who died at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, was the sixth fatality following the industrial explosion and fire. Sole surviving victim is Matt Gumbel, currently being treated at Harborview. Memorial service elements included a U.S. Army color guard, as Janz had served six years in the Army after graduating from Anacortes High School in 1986. That service included a stint in Operation Desert Storm. Speakers at the service recalled Janz as cherished son, brother, father, fiancee, friend and co-worker. Officiating was Pastor Doug Glein.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
