Landmark demolished

As I listened this morning to career recollections from former radio broadcasters Don Coughlin and Al Johnson, wrecking crews were demolishing the single story building that for decades housed this community’s AM station. Some remember it as KAGT, others as KLKI, owned by Bill Berry. The building was also home to a car lot owned by the late Charlie Funk. Island Hospital now owns the Commercial Avenue property and several lots behind it, among them land once occupied by a home and an oil and lube business. Plans call for parking and a medical arts facility. The “new” radio station is KWLE 1340, housed on 32nd Street.

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
