Tesoro memorial run

Tesoro employees, families and friends this year hosted a motorcycle “poker run” in honor of seven refinery employees who were killed in an accident earlier this year. The event, scheduled the day before the annual Oyster Run, drew dozens of riders including those pictured here in the first wave of riders leaving the refinery on a five-stop route that ends in Coupeville. Proceeds from the fund-raiser will go to the Burned Children Recovery Foundation, represented Saturday by founder Michael Mathis. Tesoro employee Bob Spiller was leader among about two dozen Tesoro employee volunteers participating in the event. On hand at the 8 a.m. start of the run were friends and family of some of the accident victims.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
