Honoring Dallas

Gathering in Anacortes today to pay tribute to the late Dallas Kloke are rock climbers from all over the region. Kloke, an Anacortes resident, died last year at age 71 as the result of a climbing accident in the North Cascades. Pictured here at Starbucks Saturday morning are Calvin Landrus (right) and Dean Olin, who were members with Kloke of an organization called Solid Rock – Climbers for Christ (SRCFC). Climbers will gather today for a work party and memorial at Mt. Erie, where Kloke spent countless hours including time to develop climbing routes. In this photo, SRCFC National Director Landrus displays a photo book created to honor Kloke. See www.srcfc.org to read more about Kloke and today’s memorial event at Mt. Erie.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
