This girl was among about 300 children served Saturday at the 2011 “Ready to Learn” Fair in Anacortes. She enjoyed making this paper heart at a crafts table set up to provide options for children as they moved through more than a dozen stations offering back to school supplies and services. The event, sponsored by the Salvation Army Anacortes Corps, was staffed by dozens of volunteers in cooperation with the Anacortes School District. Among services and supplies were haircuts, bicycle helmets, clothing, books, backpacks and vouchers to purchase shoes and lunch. Portable canteens were operated by the Salvation Army and Kiwanis Club. Numerous other service organizations, the Anacortes Fire Department and school district staff were on hand as well.
