Veterans Day event coming

Mark your calendar for a free Friday, November 11 event honoring U.S. military, active and retired, and their families. A two-part Veterans Day event will begin at historic Causland Park at 10:45 a.m. This element of the event will include a cannon blast and a brief wreath ceremony. Following that, guests are invited to the Port of Anacortes warehouse on Commercial Avenue. A program that begins at 11 a.m. will feature speakers including Mayor Dean Maxwell, retired U.S. Navy Cdr. Matt Miller and Yadiera Young, wife of a decorated veteran. In addition to speakers, the ceremony will include music provided by AHS band members and vocalist Kaithlyn Wollam. Refreshments including coffee and pastries will be provided, and there will be a wreath ceremony at water’s edge on Pier 1. Pictured here from last year’s event is veteran Don Yankacy.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
