Community loses long-time leader

Eulogized Monday night by the Anacortes City Council was long-time community leader Nick Petrish, who passed away Monday, December 19. Petrish, who had announced recently that he would not seek another term in office due to illness, was appointed to the council in 1997 and elected as Ward 1 councilman in 2003 and 2007, serving a total of 14 years. The 1955 Anacortes High School graduate’s numerous “causes” during his tenure included a new police and municipal court building, library, waterlines and trails. He told the Anacortes American he was particularly proud of initiating the effort that led to new design standards intended to preserve Old Town’s character. This photograph of Petrish (center, hat) was taken at the November 2009 groundbreaking ceremony for Anthony’s restaurant. Petrish was speaking to city Public Works Director Fred Buckenmeyer (right).

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
