Anacortes through Shadra’s eyes

It was not an isolated incident. I was sitting at Starbucks on Commercial Avenue the other day when a man entered the shop with his wife. She continued walking toward the counter, but the man stopped dead in his tracks when the art on the wall to the right caught his eye. “Wow!” he exclaimed, taking in details on the painted panels before finally responding to the prompting to order his drink. The work in question is a remarkable six-paneled original painting by Anacortes resident Shadra Zane, commissioned by Starbucks shortly after the coffee shop opened. Detail in the painting is phenomenal — well worth an extended period of examination. Scenes, painted from photographs taken by husband Del, range from the Washington Park loop road to one of the most colorful buildings in Historic Downtown Anacortes. This photograph of Shadra’s work is taken by Del. Visit the Starbucks at 1720 Commercial Avenue to enjoy this art work up close and personal.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
